Launching of the first phase of the construction of a 30-MW solar power plant project at Blitta in the Republic of Togo, cofinanced by BOAD to the tune XOF7 billion.
Lomé, 3 February 2020. Mr. Christian Adovelande, President of the West African Development Bank (BOAD) attended the launching ceremony for the first phase of the construction of a 30-MW solar power plant at Blitta in Togo. The ceremony was chaired by the His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, President of the Republic of Togo.
The project involves the construction, operation and maintenance of the solar power plant, as well as the erection of transmission facilities to be connected to the Togo interconnected grid for supplying power to CEET (Togo national power company). It meets the key objectives, particularly: i) providing access to electric power for additional 30,000 households and the cotton ginning plant at Blitta; ii) contributing towards improved electrification rate in the country, increasing from 45% in 2018 to 60% in 2022; and iii) contributing to improved living conditions of the populations.
For a pretax total cost of XOF21.5 billion, the project is co-financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), AMEA POWER, and BOAD which provides the Togolese Government with a concessional loan of XOF7 billion for the implementation of this operation. It is part of the national development plan (for 2018-2022) adopted by the Togolese Government, particularly areas 2 and 3, whose implementation will be accompanied by significant increase in renewable energies in the energy mix, whilst reducing power generation cost.
This loan brings to XOF662 billion the total amount of loans granted by BOAD to Togo, all sectors combined, including XOF97 billion in the energy sector.
