Lomé, December 14, 2021. Mr. Serge EKUE, President of the West African Development Bank (BOAD), together with Mr. N’Betona MELESSIKE, President of the NGO Ecosystème Naturel Propre (ENPRO), and Mr. Gado BEMAH, President of the NGO Science et Technologie Africaines pour un Développement Durable (STADD), signed subsidy contracts for the respective amounts of 17 062 962 FCFA and 30 000 000 FCFA for the implementation of the Sustainable Waste Management Support Program in the Communes of the city of Lomé.
With these operations, the Bank is for the first time intervening directly in favor of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), marking a new stage in its desire and commitment to support the economic and social development efforts of its member states. It also confirms its determination and commitment to work harder to create favorable conditions for economic development based, among other things, on the creation of healthy environments through the sustainable strengthening of its interventions in the fields of environment and sanitation.
The overall aim of the program covered by these grants is to help improve waste management in the city of Lomé and protect the urban environment by strengthening waste collection and sorting (solid, liquid, biomedical, etc.) and recycling systems. Specifically, its implementation will strengthen existing waste collection systems with priority actions aimed at i) organize and professionalize waste collectors ii) strengthen the organizational, technical and material capacities of waste collectors as well as waste collection, sorting and treatment conditions iii) improve collection systems iv) contribute to waste recycling. The project will also help to promote behavioral change in terms of health, hygiene and environmental protection.
These operations are part of the implementation of the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan (Djoliba Plan), which aims to achieve development results in terms of job creation, transport infrastructure to facilitate the movement of people and goods, facilitating access to food via agricultural production, and increasing energy production capacity.
